James C. Smith - Owner of Town & Country Lanes Dies in an Automobile
Accident
Salt Lake Tribune, August 2, 2006
An 84-year-old Murray man was killed in a rollover accident Tuesday
afternoon on Interstate 70, about 8 miles east of Grand Junction, Colo.
James C. Smith was a passenger in a westbound 1999 Oldsmobile when a
thunderstorm rolled in, causing mud and water to cake the highway, said
Colorado State Trooper Gilbert Mares. The vehicle hydroplaned, ran off the
right side of the highway, struck a delineator post, rotated and rolled
onto its roof. Smith, who was not belted in, was forced into the rear seat
and submerged under water and debris until a passer-by stopped and pulled
him out, Mares said. He was flown to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction
where he later died. The driver of the Oldsmobile, Rose S. Smith, 76, also
of Murray, was treated for moderate injuries. It was unknown if she was
wearing a seatbelt.
